About Eddie “The Eagle” Edwards
In 1988, Michael “Eddie” Edwards became the first person to represent Great Britain in Olympic ski jumping. He finished last in both events at the Calgary Winter Olympics. And in doing so, he captured the imagination of the entire world.
Eddie’s story is one of extraordinary determination in the face of almost comical adversity. He was entirely self-funded, training in borrowed equipment, sleeping in cars and abandoned buildings, and at one point even living in a Finnish mental hospital because he couldn’t afford accommodation. He weighed nearly 9 kilograms more than his nearest competitor and was so severely short-sighted that his goggles fogged up at altitude, leaving him essentially jumping blind.
None of it stopped him. He qualified as Britain’s sole ski jumper, competed at the biggest sporting event on earth, and became a global phenomenon overnight. Newspapers called him a flop. The public called him a hero. He appeared on talk shows around the world, including The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, while the Games were still going on.
His impact on the sport was so significant that the International Olympic Committee introduced what became known as the “Eddie the Eagle Rule” – tightening qualification standards specifically because of his unprecedented journey. No one has followed in his footsteps since.
Since retiring from competition, Eddie has built a remarkable second career as a speaker, television personality and charity patron. He earned a law degree from De Montfort University, appeared on ITV’s Splash alongside Tom Daley, competed on The Masked Dancer, and starred in pantomime to sold-out audiences. His life was immortalised in the 2016 biographical film Eddie the Eagle, starring Taron Egerton, which he has watched over a hundred times and says still makes him cry.
In February 2026, Eddie attended the Milan Winter Olympics as a special guest, reflecting on his unique place in Olympic history nearly four decades after Calgary. At 62, he still skis regularly and has said his ultimate ambition is to ski a black run on his 100th birthday.
Audiences consistently describe him as warm, engaging, brilliantly funny and utterly inspiring. He is living proof that success isn’t always about winning – it’s about having the courage to try.

A multi-course dinner is included, with drinks available to purchase from the bar.
