About Sir AP McCoy OBE
Sir Anthony “AP” McCoy is, by any measure, the most dominant figure in the history of jump racing. Born in Moneyglass, County Antrim, he rode his first winner at the age of 17 and went on to become Champion Jockey for an unprecedented 20 consecutive seasons between 1995 and 2015 – a span of dominance that has no parallel in modern sport.
His career record reads like fiction: 4,358 winners, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the Champion Hurdle, the Queen Mother Champion Chase, the King George VI Chase, and the Grand National. He held the number one spot in his sport for 1,040 weeks – longer than Roger Federer in tennis, longer than Tiger Woods in golf.
In 2010, he finally won the Grand National aboard Don’t Push It, a victory that moved even the most hardened racing fans. That same year, he became the first jockey ever to win the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, beating competition from every sport in the country.
But perhaps what defines AP McCoy most is resilience. He suffered over 1,000 falls during his career and broke bones more than 700 times, yet was renowned for getting back in the saddle faster than any rider in the sport. It wasn’t just talent – it was an almost superhuman refusal to be beaten.
Since retiring, AP has become a respected voice in racing as a presenter for ITV Racing, a newspaper columnist for The Times, and one of the most sought-after keynote speakers in British sport. He is President of the Professional Jockeys’ Association and a Global Ambassador for Laureus.
In April 2026, he will run his first ever marathon at the London Marathon – not for himself, but as a support runner for former England rugby player Matt Hampson, who was paralysed from the neck down in a training scrum in 2005. AP’s close friend and fellow Grand National winner Graham Lee suffered a similar injury in 2023 and credits the Matt Hampson Foundation with saving his life. It’s a story that tells you everything about the kind of man AP McCoy is.
