Leicester Tigers legend, Ireland full back, and the running game's most elegant improviser
RugbyGeordan Murphy was the kind of full back opposition coaches warned their wingers about and could do nothing to stop.
Born in Naas, County Kildare, he spent almost his entire senior career at Leicester Tigers, making 323 appearances across 17 seasons and becoming one of the most decorated players in the club's history. He won four English Premiership titles and two Heineken Cups with Leicester, lifting the Heineken Cup in 2001 and 2002 and captaining the side in the final years of his playing career. His balance, footwork and willingness to try the unexpected made him a crowd favourite at Welford Road.
He won 72 caps for Ireland and was named in the 2005 British and Irish Lions squad for New Zealand, though a tournament ending injury cut his tour short. He was part of Ireland's Triple Crown winning sides of the mid 2000s under Eddie O'Sullivan.
After retiring he moved into coaching at Leicester, eventually becoming head coach of the Tigers in 2018. He now works regularly as a rugby analyst and speaker, known for his warmth, his willingness to be self-deprecating, and a storyteller's eye for the funny detail.
At Steam, he is exactly the kind of guest who turns a room into a memory.
