Below street level on St George’s Lane, steps from Monument station and Lloyd’s of London. One basement, one room, one atmosphere — set differently for every occasion.
Steam is a basement venue. That is not a disclaimer, it is the whole point.
We are below street level on St George’s Lane, a one minute walk from Monument and five from Bank. The basement setting gives every event an intimacy you can’t buy on a rooftop. The lighting is warm, the walls are close, and the room feels different at six in the evening than it does at noon.
Steam works because of what it is, not how it’s divided. The same room that hosts a speaker lunch for eighty becomes an evening reception for one hundred and seventy-five. The configuration changes. The atmosphere doesn’t.

The main seated space. This is where the speaker lunches happen, where the City turns up in twos, fours and eights, where the wine flows properly and the conversation outlasts the courses.
Long communal tables, round tables of six, and a chef’s counter for the smaller party. The room is set differently for a Cheltenham lunch than it is for a monthly boardroom dinner, and we will reset it for your event.
A separate, fully closable room for the occasions where the conversation isn’t meant for the rest of the bar. Board dinners, intimate celebrations, off-site strategy sessions, and the kind of client entertaining that wants its own door.
Configurable as boardroom style for focused work, or cabaret for relaxed evenings, or standing for drinks receptions. Up to 90 seated or 120 standing, with the layout built to fit whatever the event calls for. Every private room booking is a direct conversation with us, not a standard form.
One St George’s Lane is tucked between Eastcheap and Gracechurch Street, on the south side of the Monument/Bank corridor.
Monument, two minutes on foot.
Bank, five minutes.
Fenchurch Street, three minutes.
Liverpool Street, ten minutes if you walk briskly.
Drop off point is on Eastcheap, then a short walk down St George’s Lane. Give the driver the EC3R 8DJ postcode, or just “opposite the Walkie Talkie” and they will know.
Steam is below street level. The entrance is the black door at number one. Ring the bell during the day and walk straight down the stairs in the evening. Event host will meet you.
Steam is a basement venue reached by a single flight of stairs. We do not currently have step-free access. If that is a concern for you or a guest, please email us directly before booking and we will do everything we can to accommodate, including bespoke arrangements for specific events.
