Rangers legend, Scotland striker, and now the warmest voice in football broadcasting
FootballAlly McCoist is Rangers' all-time leading goalscorer, and on current form he is also the most popular man in a commentary box anywhere in Britain.
Across a 15-year Rangers career McCoist scored 355 goals in all competitions, winning ten league titles, nine League Cups and a Scottish Cup. He was twice the European Golden Boot winner in 1991/92 and 1992/93, a remarkable achievement for a forward in the Scottish league. For Scotland he won 61 caps and became a symbol of the Tartan Army, always smiling, always grafting.
After hanging up his boots he spent time as Walter Smith's assistant at Rangers and eventually took the manager's job himself, a period that coincided with the club's financial collapse in 2012. He stayed on through administration and into the lower divisions out of loyalty to the shirt, a decision that cost him professionally but earned him a lifetime of goodwill from the Ibrox faithful.
It is as a broadcaster that McCoist has found his second act. His work on TNT Sports Champions League coverage alongside Darren Fletcher has become appointment television, and his talkSPORT breakfast partnership turned him into a national treasure. His genuine enthusiasm, self-deprecating humour and warmth have made him, remarkably, more famous now than at any point during his playing career.
At Steam he brings the lot: Graeme Souness anecdotes, Ibrox derbies, the 1996 European Championships, and a laugh that fills a room before the punchline lands.
