Andy Farrell

Dual-code international, Ireland head coach, and the man who led the Lions to a series win in Australia

Rugby

The story

Andy Farrell has been a captain, a convert, and a coach, and he has been elite at every stage of the journey.

Born in Wigan in 1975, he captained Great Britain in rugby league at 21 and led Wigan Warriors to multiple Super League titles. In 2005 he crossed codes to rugby union with Saracens, winning a handful of England caps before injuries forced a premature retirement. The greatness came next, in coaching. He worked under Stuart Lancaster with England, joined Ireland as defence coach in 2016, and took the head job in 2019.

Under Farrell, Ireland rose to world number one, won a Six Nations Grand Slam in 2023, and beat the All Blacks on their own soil for the first time. In 2024 he was named head coach of the British and Irish Lions, and in the summer of 2025 he led them to a 2-1 Test series win in Australia, the first Lions series victory down under since 2013. In 2026 he returned to the Ireland post and launched a new Six Nations campaign.

On stage Farrell is thoughtful, clear, and generous with the detail. He talks about leadership under pressure, the code-switching years, and what it takes to build a dressing room that performs at Test level. Corporate audiences in particular find him gold.
