England World Cup winner, Wasps legend, and one of the great English back rowers
RugbyLawrence Dallaglio is one of only three England men to have lifted the Rugby World Cup as part of the 2003 squad, and the only England captain to have won the Six Nations Grand Slam, the Heineken Cup and the Premiership in a single career. Big, uncompromising and relentlessly competitive, he was the beating heart of English rugby for the best part of 15 years.
Born in Shepherd's Bush in 1972, Dallaglio came through at Wasps, where he would spend his entire club career. He won three Premiership titles and two Heineken Cups, captaining the club for the majority of his time at Loftus Road and then the Causeway Stadium. For England he won 85 caps and scored 17 tries from the back row, captaining the side between 1997 and 1999 and again briefly after the 2003 World Cup.
That 2003 World Cup is the one the world remembers. Dallaglio started every England game in the tournament and was a leader on the pitch alongside Martin Johnson as Clive Woodward's side became the only northern hemisphere team to win the trophy. Two British and Irish Lions tours, in 1997 and 2005, sealed his standing among the game's modern greats.
He retired in 2008 after one last Premiership title with Wasps and has since become a familiar voice in the rugby media, a prolific charity fundraiser through the Dallaglio RugbyWorks foundation, and an in demand speaker. Off stage he is a committed worker for causes supporting young people out of education. On stage he is direct, warm and funny, with the authority of a man who has captained his country in a World Cup Final.
