Ben Youngs

England's most-capped scrum-half and a one-club man at Leicester

Rugby

The story

When Ben Youngs retired from international rugby in 2023 he left the field as the most-capped scrum-half in English history, a statistic that surprised nobody who had watched him run a game.

Youngs made his England debut as a 20-year-old in 2010 and went on to win 127 caps over 13 seasons, a total that speaks to both his quality and his remarkable durability. He featured in four Rugby World Cups, reached the final in 2019, and was central to the England side that won back-to-back Six Nations titles in 2016 and 2017 under Eddie Jones. His try against Australia on debut remains one of the great England introductions.

Throughout it all he played his club rugby at Leicester Tigers, following in the family tradition set by his father Nick and brother Tom. He made over 300 appearances for the Tigers and lifted the Premiership title in 2022, a fitting reward after years of service at a club that shaped him from age group rugby onwards.

He has moved smoothly into media work since retirement, contributing regularly to TNT Sports coverage and building out a podcast and broadcasting portfolio that draws on his tactical intelligence and easy manner. He is one of the game's most articulate recent voices on coaching, leadership, and the realities of a modern Test career.

At Steam he offers the scrum-half's view of English rugby over a remarkable era, told by someone who was on the inside of every key moment.
