Billy Bonds

West Ham's record appearance holder and the captain who defined a generation in claret and blue

Football

The story

Billy Bonds is West Ham United, or as close to it as any single player has ever come.

Between 1967 and 1988 he made 799 appearances for the club, a record that is unlikely ever to be broken. He signed as a tough right back from Charlton, was converted to central midfield, then converted again to centre half, and was good enough in all three positions to be considered a contender for an England call that somehow never came. He lifted the FA Cup twice as captain, in 1975 and again in 1980, and was the backbone of the side through the Bobby Moore era and well beyond.

After retirement he moved into coaching at West Ham, eventually taking over as manager in 1990 and guiding the club back to the top flight. He left the job in 1994 under difficult circumstances but remained a beloved figure at Upton Park. In 2019 the club renamed a stand at the London Stadium in his honour, a rare living tribute for a player.

He was awarded an MBE in 1988 for services to football. Quieter than many of his peers, Bonds never chased the spotlight. When he speaks about West Ham, about the club's golden generation and the East London dressing rooms of the seventies and eighties, you are hearing from a man who was in the middle of it all for more than two decades.

At Steam, he is the kind of guest who rewards an audience willing to lean in and listen.
