Liverpool and England captain, European champion, and the voice of Kirkby made good
FootballPhil Thompson was a Kirkby lad who grew up on the Kop, then walked out onto the Anfield pitch and lifted almost every trophy the game could offer.
He was a rangy, clever centre half who anchored the Liverpool defence through the club's most successful era. Between 1971 and 1984 he won seven league titles, two European Cups, the UEFA Cup, the League Cup and the FA Cup, and captained the side to the 1981 European Cup in Paris. He was capped 42 times by England and led his country too. For a local boy to come home with all of that is still remarkable.
After retiring he moved into coaching at Liverpool alongside Gerard Houllier, including a long spell as assistant manager during which he briefly took the first team when Houllier was recovering from major heart surgery. Thompson's passion for the club was never in doubt, and his commitment in that period is remembered warmly at Anfield.
He spent more than a decade as a regular pundit on Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday, where his sharp Scouse opinions and clear love of the game made him one of the show's most popular voices. He remains a familiar figure on the Liverpool speaker and supporter circuit.
At Steam, he is a room full of football stories told by a man who still cares about every result.
