Captain Marvel, Manchester United's heartbeat, and England's warrior midfielder
FootballBryan Robson was called Captain Marvel for a reason. He ran through walls, scored goals no holding midfielder had any business scoring, and kept playing through injuries that would have ended most careers years earlier.
Signed by Ron Atkinson from West Brom in 1981 for a then British record fee, Robson became the defining Manchester United player of the 1980s and early 1990s. He captained the side through three FA Cup wins, a Cup Winners' Cup triumph in 1991, and finally to the Premier League title in 1993, the club's first league championship in 26 years. He was an inspiration to Sir Alex Ferguson's earliest title winning teams and a bridge to the Class of 92.
For England he won 90 caps and captained the side 65 times, a figure bettered only by a handful of men. He played in three World Cups, scored the fastest goal in World Cup finals history at the time, and led the team through the 1986 and 1990 tournaments. Injuries in major tournaments became a cruel running theme.
After United he managed Middlesbrough through their rise into the Premier League era and has held roles at West Brom, Sheffield United, and Thailand. He remains a club ambassador at Old Trafford and one of the game's most in demand speakers.
At Steam Wine Bar, Robson brings the full story of a Manchester United transformation, the England armband, and a dressing room shared with some of the finest footballers the British game has produced.
