Frank Stapleton

Arsenal and Manchester United striker, Ireland's record scorer for a generation

Football

The story

Frank Stapleton belongs to a generation of strikers who got in where it hurt, won everything in the air, and looked almost apologetic about it afterwards.

Born in Dublin, Stapleton came through at Arsenal and formed a memorable partnership with Malcolm Macdonald before graduating to the full first team. He was the complete centre forward for his era: good on the ground, outstanding in the air, tireless in the press. He won the FA Cup with Arsenal in 1979, scoring in the final, then moved to Manchester United in 1981 and won it again in 1983 and 1985.

For the Republic of Ireland he was a talisman for nearly a decade, finishing as the country's record goal scorer with twenty international goals, a mark that stood until Robbie Keane passed it many years later. He played under Jack Charlton in the golden era of Irish football and captained his country.

Stapleton moved on to Ajax, Derby, Le Havre, Blackburn, and Bradford in a long wind down, then went into coaching and management, including a spell in Bradford's managerial hot seat. He has since worked in punditry and youth development.

At Steam Wine Bar, Stapleton brings the inside story of a golden Arsenal team, an Old Trafford dressing room in the final years before Sir Alex Ferguson, and an Ireland shirt he wore with real pride.
