England's all-time top scorer, Euro 2022 winner, and the striker a generation grew up watching
FootballEllen White scored more goals for England than any woman or man has ever managed, and then she quietly walked away.
She finished her international career with 52 goals in 113 caps, overtaking Kelly Smith along the way and setting a benchmark that England's next generation will be chasing for years. She played at three World Cups, scoring six at the 2019 tournament in France, and had a starring role in the summer of 2022 when the Lionesses won the European Championship on home soil. White announced her retirement from all football days after that final, ending things at the top on her own terms.
Her club career took her from Arsenal to Leeds, Notts County, Birmingham and Manchester City, with a stint at Bayern Munich in between. She won league titles, FA Cups and League Cups, and was twice PFA Players' Player of the Year. The goggles celebration, inherited from her partner, became one of the most recognisable images of English women's football.
Since retiring, White has moved comfortably into broadcasting. She is a regular BBC pundit, a Women's Super League analyst, and an advocate for the growth of the women's game at every level from grassroots to the elite.
At Steam, she brings the voice of a player who was inside the tournament that changed women's football in England forever.
