Graham Roberts

Tottenham and Rangers hard man with a trophy cabinet to match

Football

The story

Graham Roberts did not arrive at Tottenham via the usual route, and he never played the game by the usual rules either.

Signed from non-league Weymouth in 1980, Roberts went on to become the captain and defensive heart of a wonderful Spurs side that won the FA Cup in 1981 and 1982 and lifted the UEFA Cup in 1984. That European final, where Roberts scored in a penalty shootout victory over Anderlecht in front of a full White Hart Lane, is the match Tottenham fans still talk about with a catch in their voice.

A move to Rangers followed in 1986 under Graeme Souness, and Roberts immediately became part of the revolution that dragged the Ibrox club back to the top of Scottish football. He picked up a league title and a Scottish League Cup in a short but memorable stint, and showed that English players could more than hold their own north of the border.

Six caps for England followed, along with later spells at Chelsea and West Bromwich Albion, but it is as a fierce, no-nonsense captain of two of Britain's biggest clubs that Roberts is remembered. He has always been a forthright speaker, unafraid of an opinion, and generous with the stories of the dressing rooms he shared.

At Steam he talks the old-school game with the authority of a man who won trophies the hard way.
