James Haskell

England flanker turned broadcaster, DJ, and one of rugby's loudest second lives

Rugby

The story

James Haskell never did quiet. Not on the field, not on a podcast, not anywhere within earshot of a microphone. It is hard to think of a recent England player who has built a larger, louder second act.

On the pitch Haskell was a powerful openside flanker who won 77 caps for England between 2007 and 2018. He played for Wasps, Stade Francais, Ricoh Black Rams in Japan, Highlanders in New Zealand, Northampton, and Wasps again. Everywhere he went he was a physical presence and, by his own cheerful admission, a character. He was part of the England squad for the 2011 and 2015 Rugby World Cups and toured with the British and Irish Lions in 2017.

Away from rugby his career has run in every direction at once. He has written best selling books, trained as a mixed martial arts fighter, DJs internationally, hosts the hugely popular Good, The Bad and The Rugby podcast with Mike Tindall and Alex Payne, and appears regularly on television as a pundit and presenter.

He is, in short, very hard to book and very easy to enjoy. His speaking style is fast, loud, self aware, and funnier than it has any right to be coming from a man who used to make his living running at other men.

At Steam Wine Bar, Haskell brings Lions stories, dressing room secrets, and the kind of unguarded honesty that has turned him into one of the most in demand voices in British sport.
