Harlequins full-back, 72 England caps, and one of the most combative defenders of his generation
RugbyMike Brown was the sort of full-back you would want standing under a high ball in a gale. Fearless, unfussy, and almost unreasonably brave.
A one club man for the great bulk of his career, Brown came through the Harlequins academy and went on to play more than three hundred times for the club. He won the Premiership title in 2012, a Challenge Cup, and captained Quins through a long era of top flight rugby. His wrestling defensive style made him a nightmare for wingers and forwards alike.
For England he won 72 caps across nearly a decade in the white shirt, starred in the 2014 Six Nations where he was named Player of the Championship, and played at the 2015 Rugby World Cup. He was never going to be the flashiest name on the team sheet, but coaches picked him because they knew exactly what they would get.
After leaving Quins he joined Newcastle Falcons and continued playing into his late thirties, a rare feat for a full-back in the professional era. He has become a familiar voice in rugby punditry and a regular on rugby podcasts and broadcast panels.
At Steam Wine Bar, Brown brings the view from the back of the field, a front row seat at the most intense period of modern English rugby, and the unfiltered honesty that made him both admired and, occasionally, feared.
