Jamie Roberts

Wales and Lions centre, qualified doctor, and the thinking rugby player's rugby player

Rugby

The story

Jamie Roberts is the unusual kind of international sportsman who finished a Cardiff University medical degree while also becoming one of the most feared centres in world rugby. Most top players have two things on their mind. Roberts somehow had four or five.

He won 94 caps for Wales between 2008 and 2017, scoring 12 international tries, and was a pivotal figure in the Grand Slam sides of 2012 and the Six Nations champions of 2013. He toured with the British and Irish Lions three times, going on two of those tours and winning Player of the Series in the drawn 2009 tour to South Africa, an achievement rarely seen from a player in only his second international year. His partnership with Jonathan Davies in midfield became the template for the modern hard-running inside centre.

Off the pitch Roberts continued his medical studies throughout his playing career, eventually adding a Masters from Cambridge to the qualifications, and taking a Blue in the Varsity match while he was there. There is a particular rugby joke about Roberts, that he was the only player in Test history capable of stitching you up after he had run through you.

Now a qualified doctor and writer with a popular autobiography and regular media work, Roberts is a thoughtful, articulate and often very funny after-dinner speaker. Audiences tend to leave his events with a much clearer sense of what the game really looks like from the inside.
