Jason Robinson

Dual-code rugby great, 2003 World Cup winner, and the man who scored the try

Rugby

The story

Some players run onto a pitch and you cannot take your eyes off them. Jason Robinson was that player in two sports.

Born in Leeds in 1974, Robinson began his career in rugby league at Wigan, where he won six Challenge Cups and two World Club Challenges and was recognised as one of the most electric wingers the league code had produced. In 2000 he crossed to rugby union, signed by Sale Sharks, and within 18 months was in the England side. His balance, acceleration, and trademark step made him the player no defender wanted in front of them.

On 22 November 2003, in Sydney, he sliced through the Australian defence to score England's only try of the Rugby World Cup final. Jonny Wilkinson finished the job with the drop goal, but the Robinson try is the image most English rugby supporters carry in their heads. He captained the Lions on the 2005 tour of New Zealand and retired from international rugby in 2007.

Since retiring, Robinson has built a speaking career rooted in his Christian faith and his personal story, which includes the transformation from troubled young league player to national rugby union hero. At Steam his talks mix the two-sport career, the 2003 dressing room, and a quieter reflection on what drove him. Audiences describe him as one of the most genuinely moving speakers on the circuit.
