Jeff Stelling

The voice of Saturday afternoon football and one of British broadcasting's most recognisable anchors

Football

The story

For 25 years Jeff Stelling did something on British television that nobody thought was possible. He made a results service thrilling.

As the anchor of Sky Sports' Soccer Saturday from 1994 to 2021, Stelling turned the unlikely format of four men watching unseen matches in a studio into appointment viewing for millions. His command of statistics was legendary, his one liners legendary, and his delivery at the moment a Hartlepool equaliser dropped at Gillingham became a weekly national event. Saturday afternoons in Britain sounded like Jeff whether you were in the car, in the pub, or in the stadium car park.

Hartlepool United is his club, his love, and the thread that runs through everything he does. He has served as the club's honorary president, walked 262 miles in nine days to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK, and put his own reputation on the line many times for the non league and lower league game. Few broadcasters in any sport have done more off camera than Stelling has for the causes he believes in.

Since leaving Sky, he has fronted Champions League coverage for TNT Sports and Friday night football for talkSPORT, still finding time to host charity events and after dinner audiences up and down the country. A night with Jeff is part football history, part quiz show, and part stand up comedy, all delivered by the man who made the scores matter.
