Kevin Nolan

Bolton and West Ham captain, Premier League goal-scoring midfielder, and an East End favourite

Football

The story

Kevin Nolan was the kind of midfielder every manager wanted, and every supporter loved. He ran late into the box, he organised everyone around him, and he captained three different clubs in the Premier League.

Born in Liverpool in 1982, Nolan came through the Bolton academy and became the spine of the Sam Allardyce side that surprised the Premier League in the mid-2000s. He finished top scorer at Bolton twice from midfield, a rare feat, before moving to Newcastle and then to West Ham, where he became the captain Sam Allardyce trusted to lead the club back into the top flight and settle them there. He scored a hat-trick against Newcastle in 2013 that is still played on loop in East London pubs.

Since hanging up his boots he has moved into coaching and management, picking up experience at Leyton Orient and Notts County, and he has become one of the most genuine voices on the after-dinner circuit. He tells the dressing-room stories without the self-aggrandisement that makes so many footballer talks forgettable.

At Steam he is a near-fixture on the East London speaker rota. The Hammers crowd in the venue treat his appearances as home games. He pays them back with proper stories and a long autograph line.
