Matt Dawson

England scrum half, 2003 World Cup winner, and one of broadcasting's sharpest rugby voices

The story

Matt Dawson is the scrum half who laid on the ball that Jonny Wilkinson famously won a World Cup with.

Born in Birkenhead in 1972, Dawson came through the Northampton Saints academy and made his England debut in 1995, going on to win 77 caps. He was part of the British and Irish Lions tour to South Africa in 1997, where he scored a famous try in the first Test and came home with a winner's medal, and he was a fixture in the England side that Sir Clive Woodward shaped into the world's best.

His defining moment came on 22 November 2003 in Sydney. With the World Cup final against Australia tied and extra time ticking away, Dawson made a darting break from the base of a ruck, was tackled just short of the Wallaby line, and in the next phase delivered the pass that gave Wilkinson the dropped goal which won England the World Cup. It is the most replayed passage of play in English rugby history.

Since retiring he has been one of the sport's most familiar faces: long serving captain on A Question of Sport, Strictly Come Dancing contestant, and a lead rugby pundit for the BBC. On stage he is quick witted and relaxed, the storyteller a room wants when it is after eleven o'clock and the wine is doing the talking.
