Le God of Southampton, and one of the most gifted footballers England ever produced
FootballFor 16 years, Southampton fans watched a player do things with a football that nobody else in the Premier League could do. Matt Le Tissier could have played for Manchester United, Tottenham, Chelsea, any of them. He chose to stay at Southampton, and he became Le God.
Born on Guernsey in 1968, Le Tissier joined Southampton as a teenager and stayed until he retired in 2002. He scored 209 goals in 540 games for the club, became the first midfielder to score 100 Premier League goals, and was the most reliable penalty taker in the history of the English game, converting 47 of his 48 attempts.
The highlights reel is ridiculous. The lobbed volley against Newcastle, the chip over Tim Flowers, the goal against Blackburn after he rounded half the team, the free kicks that ended up in the top corner from anywhere inside 35 yards. For England he won eight caps, a number that every Southampton fan will tell you was a national embarrassment.
He retired in 2002, moved into punditry with Sky's Soccer Saturday alongside Jeff Stelling, and more recently has become one of the more outspoken figures in English football on issues off the pitch.
On stage he is warm, modest and very funny, with the easy manner of a man who knows exactly what he was good at and is happy to tell the stories. For any Premier League fan who watched the 1990s, booking Matt Le Tissier is booking a bit of their childhood.
