Paul Gascoigne

The most naturally gifted English footballer of his generation

Football

The story

Paul Gascoigne arrived in English football as a teenager at Newcastle United and left behind moments that still define what the game can be at its best.

Geordie to his bones, Gascoigne broke through at St James' Park before a 1988 move to Tottenham, where he became the creative heart of Terry Venables' side and helped lift the FA Cup in 1991. His free kick in the semi-final against Arsenal that year, arrowed into the top corner from 35 yards, is still replayed every spring. He moved to Lazio that summer, recovered from a career-threatening knee injury, then joined Rangers in 1995 and won two league titles in three seasons at Ibrox.

For England he produced the moments that come to mind whenever anyone says his name: the tears at Italia 90, the volley against Scotland at Euro 96, the dentist's chair celebration, the mischief on and off the pitch. He won 57 caps, scored 10 international goals, and entered a category of player that English football has rarely produced before or since, a footballer defined by imagination rather than athleticism.

Life after the game has been well documented and sometimes difficult. Gascoigne has always been candid about his struggles and remains one of football's most recognisable figures, greeted with genuine affection wherever he goes.

At Steam, Gazza tells the story of a career shaped by extraordinary talent and a life that never stopped moving.
