Peter Reid

Everton league winner, England World Cup midfielder, and one of football management's great characters

Football

The story

Peter Reid is a footballer's footballer, the kind of hard running, all action midfielder that every team he has ever played for has loved and every team against him has dreaded.

Born in Huyton, he broke into the Bolton Wanderers first team as a teenager and signed for Everton in 1982, where he became the engine of Howard Kendall's great side. He won two First Division titles in 1985 and 1987, the FA Cup in 1984, the European Cup Winners' Cup in 1985 and was named PFA Player of the Year in 1985. 13 caps for England followed, including a starting role in the 1986 World Cup quarter final against Argentina, the match of Diego Maradona's two famous goals.

Management brought him back to the top of the game. He took Sunderland to two promotions and seven years in the Premier League, managed Manchester City, Coventry and Leeds, and later worked in Thailand, India and the Bhutan national team. The stories from each stop are the stuff of football folklore, told in broad Merseyside vowels and rarely without a punchline.

On stage he is warm, quick and refreshingly unfiltered. A Reidy lunch is a rolling masterclass in football as it used to be, told by a man who played it and managed it from the very top to the very grass roots.
