Tony Cottee

West Ham and Everton goalscorer, Sky Sports pundit, and a born finisher

Football

The story

Tony Cottee was the archetypal penalty box striker: small, sharp, and almost impossible to mark for 90 minutes.

Born in Plaistow in 1965, Cottee came through the West Ham academy and made his debut on New Year's Day 1983 as a 17 year old, scoring in a 3 to 0 win. He became the PFA Young Player of the Year in 1986 and finished that season as the First Division's joint top scorer.

In 1988 he left West Ham for Everton in what was then a British record transfer fee, marking his debut with a hat trick against Newcastle. He spent six years at Goodison Park, where he remains a fan favourite, before returning to Upton Park in 1994 and later playing in Malaysia and for Leicester, where he scored in the 2000 League Cup final win over Tranmere.

Over a 20 year career he scored more than 300 goals in senior football, earned seven England caps and was one of the most reliable front men of his generation. Since hanging up his boots he has become a familiar voice on Sky Sports, BBC Radio 5 Live and talkSPORT, and tours the country as a sharp, self deprecating after dinner speaker with 20 years of stories from two of English football's most colourful clubs.
