Wayne Barnes

The most experienced Test referee in rugby union history

Rugby

The story

Wayne Barnes refereed the biggest match in the sport, retired on top, and along the way became the most experienced Test official rugby union has ever produced.

A London barrister by profession, Barnes took his first Test match in 2006 and went on to referee 111 internationals, a world record. He officiated five Rugby World Cups between 2007 and 2023, was the man in the middle for the 2023 Rugby World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand at the Stade de France, and was widely recognised for handling that occasion with the same calm he brought to every other night on the whistle.

His career was not without its flashpoints. The 2007 World Cup quarter-final between France and New Zealand, where a disallowed forward pass call became the subject of a generation of Kiwi resentment, made Barnes a household name for reasons he never asked for. He handled the aftermath with characteristic good humour and quiet resolve, and built his reputation back through year after year of excellent, unflashy officiating at the highest level of the game.

Since retiring from international rugby in 2023 Barnes has returned fully to the bar and taken on broadcasting and media work, offering one of the most articulate voices in the game on law, decision-making, and leadership under pressure.

At Steam he offers a view of world rugby's biggest moments that nobody else can provide, and he does so with the measured wit of a man who has spent his life making difficult calls in public.
