All Black number eight, drop goal artist, and one of New Zealand's most complete forwards
RugbyZinzan Brooke is the number eight that every forward of his generation wanted to be. Powerful, clever, and blessed with the skills of a first five, he was the face of an All Blacks side that reshaped world rugby in the early professional era.
He won 58 caps for New Zealand between 1987 and 1997, and was part of the squad that lifted the inaugural Rugby World Cup in 1987. He captained the side on several occasions and played in the famous 1995 World Cup final defeat to South Africa, a tournament remembered as much for Jonah Lomu's rampage through England as for the dignified aftermath on the Ellis Park pitch.
The moment most English supporters will never forget came in that semi final in Cape Town, when Brooke dropped a goal from 45 metres, from a number eight, in a World Cup semi final. No forward before or since has had the audacity, and the technique, to try it in the same company.
After the All Blacks he moved to England and turned out for Harlequins as player and coach, becoming one of the first overseas stars to truly settle into the English club game. He has lived in the United Kingdom ever since, in broadcasting, business and speaking, and remains one of the most articulate ambassadors for the sport he helped transform.
Booking Zinzan for a Steam lunch is booking a true great of world rugby. The drop goal story alone is worth the trip.
