Celtic and Arsenal striker, Scotland international, and a natural in front of the camera
FootballCharlie Nicholas was the Scottish striker who lit up Parkhead, divided opinion at Highbury, and then turned into one of the most recognisable pundits in the British game.
Born in Glasgow in 1961, he made his name at Celtic with a brilliant 1982-83 season, 48 goals across all competitions, that earned him the nickname Champagne Charlie and a move to Arsenal at the peak of his value. His four years at Arsenal were more complicated, though he did score both goals in the 1987 League Cup final win over Liverpool at Wembley, the moment that still defines his time in North London. He returned to Celtic, won another Scottish Cup, and finished his career back in Scotland.
Nicholas then became a fixture on Sky Sports, first on Scottish coverage and then on Soccer Saturday alongside Jeff Stelling and Paul Merson, where his bold predictions and unvarnished opinions became appointment viewing for a generation of Saturday afternoon fans.
On the speaker circuit he mixes Celtic terrace stories with the inside track on the Highbury dressing rooms of the 1980s, and the Sky Sports studio years that followed. He is generous with the anecdotes and sharper in person than most pundits dare to be on camera.
