Chris Robshaw

Former England captain and Harlequins stalwart who led from the front

Rugby

The story

Chris Robshaw captained his country 42 times and played every match in the manner of a man who believed leadership meant putting himself between his team and the first tackle.

A product of Millfield School, Robshaw joined Harlequins as a teenager and made over 250 first-team appearances for the club, helping them lift the Premiership title in 2012 in one of the great Twickenham finals. He was named Premiership Player of the Season twice and became the defining figure of a Quins generation that played with adventure and discipline in equal measure.

He won 66 caps for England between 2009 and 2018, captaining the side through a period of rebuilding under Stuart Lancaster and into Eddie Jones' opening run, including the 2016 Grand Slam in the Six Nations. As captain he was never the flashiest player on the field, but he was invariably the one carrying the most metres, making the most tackles, and refusing to take a backward step.

Robshaw finished his playing career with a brief spell in the United States with San Diego Legion before retiring in 2022. Since then he has moved into coaching and media work, and remains a widely respected voice on the mental side of the game and the reality of captaining England through difficult tournaments.

At Steam he brings an honest, measured read on leadership, modern rugby, and what it actually takes to lead a national side.
