Malcolm MacDonald

Supermac, Newcastle idol, and the man who scored five for England in one night

Football

The story

Malcolm Macdonald was never anything other than a centre forward. Broad shouldered, quick off the mark, and entirely uninterested in tracking back, he was the sort of striker who made supporters sing before they had even sat down.

Signed by Newcastle United in 1971, he became an instant Tyneside hero and was christened Supermac almost from his debut. He scored freely across five seasons at St James' Park, leading the club to two domestic cup finals. He later moved to Arsenal, where he top scored in consecutive seasons, before a knee injury forced an early and painful retirement in his late twenties.

For England he won fourteen caps and wrote himself into the record books with one unforgettable performance. In April 1975 he scored all five England goals in a 5 to 0 win against Cyprus at Wembley, joining a very short list of Englishmen to score five in a single international.

After football, Macdonald moved into management at Fulham and Huddersfield, radio punditry on Tyneside, hospitality, and writing. He has been open about the difficulties that followed the end of his playing career and has become a thoughtful speaker on life inside and after the dressing room.

At Steam Wine Bar, Macdonald tells stories from a Newcastle side the Gallowgate still sings about, an Arsenal of the mid seventies, and the night five England goals fell to a single centre forward.
